How Tankless Water Heaters Differ from Storage Tanks
A tankless water heater, sometimes called an on-demand water heater, heats water only when a tap is opened rather than storing and continuously reheating a full tank. That difference has real consequences for your home.
- No volume limit: Hot water can run as long as you need it, depending on your system’s capacity and how many fixtures are in use simultaneously.
- Longer unit lifespan: Tankless units typically last around 20 years with proper maintenance, compared to 10 to 15 years for a conventional storage tank.
- Space savings: The compact, wall-mounted design frees up floor and closet space the old tank occupied.
One Contractor for the Whole Conversion
Converting from a tank to a tankless system isn’t a straight swap. The gas supply line often needs upsizing, and the venting configuration changes. Because we handle both plumbing and HVAC work, you don’t need to coordinate separate contractors for those tasks. Our technicians are licensed, insured, and trained to manage that full scope under one visit and one estimate.
We service all makes and models, and we use electronic leak detection and advanced diagnostics on installation jobs to catch issues before they become callbacks. Every estimate is free, and we don’t start work until you understand what’s included.
Financing, Maintenance, & Long-Term Support
Tankless systems carry a higher upfront cost than a standard tank replacement. We offer financing options to help manage that investment without delaying a needed upgrade.
After installation, mineral scale buildup is the primary maintenance concern. Hard water deposits accumulate inside the heat exchanger over time and reduce efficiency if left unaddressed. Our Smile Club membership covers routine maintenance, including periodic descaling, to keep the system running the way it should and help reduce the chance of early repairs. Same-day service and 24/7 emergency availability mean we’re reachable whenever something comes up.
What a Tank-to-Tankless Conversion Involves
A tank-to-tankless conversion involves more than simply removing the old water heater and connecting a new one. Because tankless systems can require different gas and venting configurations, the installation may involve updates to your home's existing connections.
In New Jersey, even a like-for-like tank water heater replacement requires a permit under the Uniform Construction Code. A tank-to-tankless conversion generally requires standard permit review before work begins. Requirements and enforcement can vary by municipality, so the exact process depends on where you live.
The conversion may involve:
- Gas supply updates: A tankless water heater may require a larger gas line to provide the necessary fuel flow.
- Venting changes: Tankless equipment typically uses a different venting configuration than a traditional tank system.
- Permit coordination: Required permits and inspections must be completed according to local requirements.
- Professional installation: Gas-connected water heater work must be performed by a licensed master plumber or a journeyman working under a master plumber's supervision.
Our technicians meet New Jersey licensing requirements and can coordinate the permitting process as part of your tankless water heater installation.
Energy Efficiency & NJ Rebate Programs
High-efficiency gas tankless water heaters are rated using the Uniform Energy Factor (UEF), a standardized measure of how efficiently a unit converts fuel to hot water. Models rated at a UEF of 0.95 or higher may qualify for New Jersey Natural Gas’s SAVEGREEN rebate program, which offers a rebate toward purchase along with 0% APR on-bill financing for qualifying homeowners. Program terms, rebate amounts, and eligibility requirements are subject to change, so we recommend confirming current offers when you schedule your estimate.

"Thanks Michael!"
Sewer backed up. Panic among the troops. Michael from Bailey came right out, updating us on his ETA via text. One LOOOOOONG snake later, our system was unclogged. I enjoyed talking with Michael as well, gave me a few tips to try to eliminate (no pun!) this issue in future. Thanks Michael!!- Clement M. -

"Professional Service"
I had Hunter Murray and his 2 helpers come out to my home today to fix a main water line. From the second they arrive they were professional and did a wonderful job. They fix the problem and cleaned up the mess and left my property looking like it was cleaned by the landscapers. I would highly recommend Bailey to anyone who needs a plumber. Also the office staff was great and professional. You can see the everyone enjoys where they work.- Steve P. -
"Amazing service!"
Tech Andrew Stinemire was dispatched to my property for a sewer line back up. The issue was accessed from the outside. Andrew called before he started to explain everything thoroughly. After job was finished he followed up with another phone call. Andrews comportment was nothing short of stellar. I have used many plumbers and unfortunately they rush you off the phone. A lot of plumbers act as if they are doing you a favor. Not Andrew! He talked to me like an old friend and made sure I understood everything. We need more plumbers like him. He understands very well that ultimately this is a service business and the customer needs to be treated with deference and respect- T. Hearn -
"Quick Response and Professional Technician"
The technician, Andrew, was friendly and kept me informed of what he was doing with the repair. It ended up being a little more work than initially anticipated because the pipes were old. He was very professional. I would definitely use Bailey again! Price was definitely reasonable. I thank Bailey for their quick response and the professionalism of their technician!- Debbie B. -
